The role of an encoder in a servo motor
Observes the mechanical motion of the actuator shaft—a change of position and the rate of change. Converts the mechanical input into an electrical impulse and transmits a series of such impulses as a quadrature signal to a controller. Widely used in automatic control fifield such as AC servo unit, especially suitable for matching with servo motor.
A servo motor, by definition, is under closed loop control. The term closed-loop control implies something that measures something else (a quantity, like position or velocity or angular rotation) that can change, and then tell a computer what it measured. The computer then tells the motor to move either forward or backward to create a desirable behavior (that was pre-programmed) based on the measurement that was reported to it. So an encoder is an example of that 'something that measured something else'. An encoder is technically a generic term that means 'something that encodes (measures) something else'. In the case of high-end servo motors, it usually refers to optical encoders (disc-type). Toy servos use a simple potentiometer, and high-quality/industrial servo motors use hall effect sensors (amongst other things). So, we need encoders in servo motors to provide a measurement to the controller (computer) so that it can correct for any undesirable behavior.
